New Zealand Travel News

At Creative Adventures we are constantly researching New Zealand accommodation, activities, restaurants, hiking tracks, local markets, galleries, entertainment, special events and more. Whatever will add to your New Zealand experience. When we find something that may be of interest to past and future guests we share it on this page.

EXCHANGE RATES ARE A BIT DISCOURAGING!
The New Zealand dollar has been quite high for a while, against the US dollar especially. This will certainly affect our bookings as we are forced to increase tour prices, or as the airlines increase their fares. Here's a promise from us: if the NZ dollar comes down and we can reduce prices, anyone that booked on at a higher price is welcome to a refund of the difference. How's that?

NEW ZEALAND LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AT IT'S BEST
When visiting the Queenstown area we recommend visiting the Craig Potton Gallery in Arrowtown. Craig Potton is New Zealand's leading landscape photographer, having captured mainland New Zealand, some of our wild sub-antarctic islands, and the frozen continent of Antarctica itself on film. Visit www.craigpottongallery.com to learn more.

NEW ZEALAND SKI-SEASON STARTS

We know it’s nice and warm up there in the northern hemisphere but if you love to ski then get down here!  New Zealand has a great selection of ski-fields, in both the North and South Islands. Coronet Peak Skifield has already opened and others are opening in the coming weeks. Visit these websites for more details  www.snow.co.nz , www.nzski.com

BOOKLOVERS HEAVEN

We recently found a special little B&B in Wellington that lovers of literature will appreciate. Booklovers B&B, located in central Wellington, is a renovated Victorian Villa with 3 large rooms. Every room has books and magazines available for you to read there or take away. Host Jane Tolerton has herself written and successfully published several books. How appropriate to have a B&B like this in a country that has more bookshops per head of population than any other country. Visit www.booklovers.co.nz

END OF SUMMER IS NOT THE END OF FINE WEATHER

New Zealand’s fine weather is not restricted to the official Summer months of December, January and February. March is just as good as February and not so busy. April too is a very nice time to be down in New Zealand. So if you think you missed out by not booking in time for the Summer months, don’t despair – you’ll enjoy a fine sunny holiday. Temperatures are a little cooler but you can expect 16–21 Celsius (61–70 F). New Zealand’s native forests are evergreen so always looking their best.

THE BEAUTIFUL HEAPHY TRACK

Ever heard of it? The Heaphy Track is 82km / 51 miles of stunning scenery walked over 4-6 days across the Kahurangi National Park. Just like the Milford and Routeburn tracks, the Heaphy is classified as a Great Walk, which means you are guaranteed incredible views and diverse vegetation around every corner. And with the sun-drenched Nelson climate, it’s a winner. You can choose to walk the Heaphy Track guided or independently, staying in public huts. Suitable for moderately fit people. Visit www.doc.govt.nz

HIKING THE LENGTH OF NEW ZEALAND

Te Araroa – The Long Pathway, is the name given to the hiking trail that will eventually stretch 3,000 kilometres (1,860 miles) from Cape Reinga at the very northern tip of the North Island all the way to Bluff at the southern end of the South Island. At least 1,000 km will be through DoC land. The rest will be across local council land, along coastlines and riverbanks, and a few other places whose status will require some political lobbying to get it through!

NEW ZEALAND CUSTOMS FORMALITIES – FRIENDLY BUT FIRM

New Zealand protects its native species and agricultural industries intensely. To achieve this, Customs officials will check your bags for food, organic and agricultural items capable of introducing diseases and pests. It is unwise to bring with you any plant, fruit, vegetable, flowers, seeds or other similar items. If you have recently been hiking, clean the dirt off your boots. Instant fines starting at NZ$200 are imposed on people who knowingly or innocently fail to follow these regulations.
